Outsourcing:Good or Bad

Latest issue of Fortune Magazine carries an article (subscription required for full access) on Outsourcing, this article takes Wipro as a case-study and talks to some of managers about what they feel about taking jobs from other countries, how things are in Bangalore and how well the guys are doing when it comes to software development.

Some time back an article on newsforge insisted why IT offshore outsourcing can't be stopped. And if all that software and BPO was not enough, even Radiologists in US are finding their work going (free registration required) to India.

Recently Information Technology Association of America said only 7-9% IT jobs will move out of US, meaning major amount of work will still be done in US and Western European countries.

Personally, i too feel outsourcing will go on and can't be stopped because it makes business sense and allows companies to offer their customers better solutions at cheaper rates.

Whats your view?

The local bar was so sure that its bartender was the strongest man around that they offered a Rs 10,000 bet. The bartender would squeeze a lemon until all the juice ran into a glass, and hand the lemon to a patron. Anyone who could squeeze one more drop of juice out would win the money. Many people like weightlifters, wrestlers, body builders, etc had tried over time, but nobody could do it. One day this scrawny little man came in, wearing thick glasses and a safari suit, and said in a tiny, squeaky voice, "I'd like to try the bet." After the laughter had died down, the bartender said OK, grabbed a lemon, and squeezed away. Then he handed the wrinkled remains of the rind to the little man. But the crowd's laughter turned to total silence as the man clenched his fist around the lemon and 5-6 drops fell into the glass. As the crowd cheered, the bartender paid the Rs 10,000, and asked the little man, "What do you do for a living? Are you a lumberjack, a weightlifter, or what?"

"No," replied the man. "I work as project manager in an IT company"

I have mixed views on out sourcing. I still think too many IT people have urealistic salary expectations but I do also expect companies to have basic loyalty to their country.

Boom time indeed raised salary expectations a lot, things did normalize little bit with slowdown but as mkt is picking up again, expectations are on rise, and as far as loyalty to a country is concerned, i feel thats the effect of globalization, whatever happens in world,good or bad, can affect your business and when you look out for oppurtunities you just dont see your own country, you keep the whole world in mind and choose the most cost effective solution.

To me, Outsourcing is good and bad both, but this moment as people don't have clear picture of the consequences, its a huge issue. I think US is not getting quality work for what they are used to by outsourcing to developing countries. Attitude and thinkings of people are so different that people in developing country might be productive but not customer friendly. I, personally have faced lot many customer relation problems. Another thing to notice is India has extraordinary IT workforce but its surprises me to see that Indian websites and many other projects have so many mistakes and other problems that makes me think one more time for outsourcing. People who are outsourcing, has priority of money making in life and quality making.

Ousourcing has pluses and minuses, but does not this outsourcing thing benefit only the privilged cities in third world, making the small towns and villages, still smaller ?
